As university’s coming to an end I’ve started to explore my options as a post graduate by looking into where I might fit within the creative industries. I have a passion for video editing but more specifically within the social media advertising world. Though my experience at university I’ve learned what my strengths and weaknesses within the different areas of the creative industries, allowing me to focus more on what I enjoy the most.

Video editing

To say I have a passion for video editing I believe would be an understatement, I can spend hours upon hours experimenting with Adobe Premiere Pro. I find it incredible fascinating how it allows me to turn raw footage into something, into a story. For me it doesn’t feel like work, it doesn’t feel like something I have to do more something I’m grateful I get to do because I genuinely enjoy the entire process.

For me, though multiple modules on my course I’ve learned I’m happiest when editing rather than filming. While I appreciate that capturing quality footage is the backbone to producing any content, my skills and passions are within post-production work. When imagining the type of role I want to do in the future, I’d prefer a situation where I can sit and edit at a computer all day everyday, rather than being out filming.

The role I’m aiming for

Ideally my current goals are to work for a big company in the Leeds area, where I can hopefully be part of a collaborative team. My whole life I have preferred a team environment, being able to bounce ideas off each other and talk though plans has always been extremely helpful to my productivity. While saying this I can also do a lot of work on my own for me its more about integrating independent work after the initial ideas and planning stages.

While looking into the future I am aware I may be behind some of my peers when potentially entering the marketing world, as my course didn’t involve any solid marketing theory. However, I do have real world experiences with helping my parents with their businesses, specifically brainstorming marketing ideas with them. I found I’ve been able to give a unique, real-world perspective tying in my own thoughts an opinions with those of my peers. I’ve also picked up other skills from my degree like how use visuals and storytelling to attract an audience and most importantly I want to build on these skills and learn more within the industry itself.

Looking forward in order to meet industry expectations I will research further into the pathways and careers that suit me and my set of skills. I will encourage feedback from my peers as well as people within the industry already to better my understanding of what the industry is truly looking for.
