The first thing I did when starting my portfolio project was research ideal job roles and what they look for in an applicant. After finding my ideal job I started to design my website with their requirements in mind.
I started by coming up with my own personal branding, including a colour scheme, typography and logo that I feel represents me. I chose an olive-green colour as I main colour because I think it represents my personality as calm and kind. I also added a brown as the accent colour as I liked the earthy tones it produced. I chose to design my logo as my name in a cool overlapping way to keep it readable and clear while sticking with the overall brand personality.
After reviewing my chosen job advert I came up with some focus areas to keep more portfolio consistent with what they are looking for.
- Content creation: I wanted my work to be the main focus of my portfolio so I included my projects on the home page as well as my portfolio page. I also included work that involved social media content creation (my graphic design work from year 1) to show I have the skills they are looking for.
- Commercial awareness: I have included all my presentations I submitted with each project on my processes page so prospective employers can see the level of thought and detail that went into every creative decision made
- Engagement: I want employers to be engaged with my content so that’s why I chose to do a whole separate page for my processes. I found when I wrote about them in the projects sections it took the focus away from the content. Also by requiring them to look for the information I believe makes it more desirable than just giving it to them all at once.
Conclusion
By focusing on these key areas I believe I have successfully aligned my portfolio with the skills and experience that employers are looking for. As well as the fact it is visually appealing and engaging. This in turn makes my portfolio the ideal one for a role like content creator within the branding and marketing field.
