Process
As I’m coming to my final months at university I’ve started to really think about what my future will look like beyond this place. When looking originally I wasn’t too sure what I actually wanted I just new it had something to do with marketing or video editing or social media or branding or maybe animation and well the list goes on. So I started the process by really thinking about what genuinely brings me joy, what modules on my course have felt like an opportunity to explore something exciting and new. I already knew video editing was my favourite technical thing I’ve learned on this course but I wanted to explore more options or how I could incorporate it into a job that offers more responsibility’s and creativity. I then started to think about my final year project where I’m exploring the world of branding and marketing (you can read more about the project in my other blog post titles ‘Production Project’), and I realised I do have a passion for it. So, I started researching job opportunities that involved specifically social media content creation with branding and video editing included. I looked on multiple sites like LinkedIn and Creativepool but I found The Dots to be the best site for the type of thing I was looking for, that’s where I came across this:
The Creative Content Executive Role at Swoon
Why I chose this role
I was drawn to this role for many reasons but what stuck out the most was the vast variety of responsibility’s it entails. It has a strong emphasis on content creative which is ideal but not just for social media for things like email marketing and digital campaigns. It will involve working on a variety of creative projects from video content production to product launches. This aligns really well with my passion for design, marketing and video editing.
Additionally, I am drawn to the companys brand itself. Swoon is a company that focuses on creating unique, statement furniture which translates in their brand identity as bold and distinctive. I think this role would be great for expanding my knowledge in the branding field while still adhering to my already formed skills within the digital marketing and creative world.
How my skills align with the role
When looking at the job description I can see how many of my skills align with the requirements, including:
- Storytelling and branding: I am currently working on a short story module where I have researched into storytelling techniques, which has taught me how important they are. I have experience with branding with my mums businesses and my group project last year. My experiences at university have helped me understand how to craft visual content that resonates with specific audiences, which I believe would allow me to contribute effectively within this role
- Social media & content strategy: from doing my literature review on marketing strategies with a focus on social media I think I have enough knowledge to get me started however this is an area I am very eager to learn more about. Especially as jobs like this do have a focus on designing and scheduling social media content, short form videos and still images.
- Video editing: for this role specifically having experience in editing is seen as advantageous, making my experience with and passion for premiere pro a very strong asset.
- Collaboration & teamwork: while we’ve talked about all about the technical skills involved I think it’s also important to mention my soft skills, specifically with teamwork. This role, like many others within the field, require an induvial to work well within a team. Swoon describes its team as highly engaged and collaborative, which is the kind of environment I want to work in and know I will thrive in.
Areas for growth
While I do feel confident I meet the majority of this adverts requirements I am aware of some areas I need to improve on. Going forward I would like to deepen my understanding of marketing strategies and more specifically performance analytics. While my literature review was a helpful start, I know I need to expand my knowledge. I want to do this to ensure that the content I create will drive engagement and achieve business goals, not just look great. I am also less familiar with email marketing so this is something I will learn more about whether through experience or my own research.
Final thoughts
The Creative Content Executive Role at Swoon is an exciting opportunity hat aligns with both my current strengths and my long term career goals. Not only does it have a focus on collaborative teamwork but it would also allow me to further my video editing and marketing skills while working on a diverse range of creative projects.
Going forward this role serves as a perfect example of the kind of position I want to secure. This has solidified my plan to go into a career focused on content creation, social media and video editing.
